When using a spike, the hooks will hang free under the lure and you will get a better hooking performance.

The spikes also save your lures from the predators sharp teeth. If you rig your stingers with the spikes (instead of the lure body), the stinger will be pulled out when the fish strikes and there is less risk that the fish bites in the rubber.
